Buhle Mathole – South African born in KwaZulu Natal, raised in the Free State, primary schooled there and for love of education received a scholarship to study high school in Johannesburg Woodmead School now Heronbridge College. 1996 I applied at UCT and I was accepted but again due to funding available I had to do first year in BCom because at the time the sponsor only wanted outcomes in Accounting and or Engineering. I was not happy but in my year as I was in the Commerce Faculty I took strides in applying for what I really wanted to study and finding applicable funding.
1997 I started in Centlivres building and the rest is history as they say. When I graduated in 2000 I also wanted to do the photographic essay overseas and I took a leap of faith in the programme that was then available to work at ski resorts whilst I did my photographic essay in Massachusetts (USA). 2004 I completed my MArch at the University of Pretoria.
I started working in 2004 when I graduated, again I gained wealth of experience and whilst working on the Gautrain project in 2007 I established my own firm in small strides Kabu Design Architects. In 2010 I joined the teaching staff at University of Pretoria (TUKS) as the practise size at the time allowed me to teach and practise.
My work has been in both teaching and practise. Kabu Design Architects has delivered on numerous residential projects to mention, schools like Buyani School in Ennerdale, Matlaisane High School in Hammanskraal and many more.
In the past 8 years of teaching my pedagogic approach has been in a pragmatic way of presenting Architecture . This I employed in the Design Studio, History of Architecture and Community Based Projects as being my main subject matter and recently Construction, I have also supervised 3 master thesis with one achieving a distinction cum laude in both design and technical in 2016.
In the Architectural fraternity I have served on the GIFA board in the past, involved in SAIA transformation committee as well as presented talks in many conferences to mention the 10th Annual Green Building Conference at the CSIR as one of the key note speakers on the dilemma of emerging Architects 2016. I have participated as a judge in students competitions like the ppc imaginarium competition.
I am still learning daily from students and colleagues and my environment but also enrolled for my PhD studies to bring the lessons learnt to account.
