Sonja Petrus Spamer is an architect whose education and practice straddle the rural, urban and international. The first black woman graduate architect from UCT, she received her Bachelor degree with distinction (BAS 1987-1990) and a distinction for her Honours Thesis (BArch 1991-1992, practical experience year in Vienna 1990).
In order to use architecture as a means to provide spatial solutions to social issues she established Sonja Petrus Spamer Architecture in Mpumalanga (1997), and Cape Town (2000). The practice received a merit award from SAIA (2005).
Her long-term research attempts to reveal how architects conceptualise the agency of people.
She provides a supportive space for students. She works dynamically between research, invention and making in order for solutions to emerge. Sonja finds time to be available to students.
With values based teaching she is able to assist students across a broad range of abilities to achieve the best results they can at university, in preparation for professional practice nationally and internationally.
